Horses of the West, LLC is owned by three women who are all horse breeders and friends: Bonnie Orvedahl, Sandy Wilson, and Kristin Aus. We live in eastern Montana and western North Dakota.
As lifetime, multi-generational horse breeders we have seen events and circumstances in recent years pressure serious, mid-sized horse breeders. Many breeders have been pushed out and those who have survived have done so by being fortunate, smart and persistent. Really, really persistent. (Persistent enough that at least a few of your good friends who don’t raise horses will question your mental health.)
Many things have worked against the mid-sized breeder lately. Major sale results routinely show the most expensive horses getting higher while the mid-level and lower-mid-level price points continue to soften. The internet, however, has provided a rare opportunity for breeders without deep pockets. By effectively using the internet even small breeders can reach prospective buyers everywhere. It was from our discussions about the state of our industry and the need for services to assist the serious breeder with a “regular person” marketing budget that the idea for Horses of the West was born.
Our purpose is to provide internet marketing assistance to breeders who need reasonable prices but personal service. In the process, we hope to create a beautiful, informative and enjoyable site for our visitors. Contact any of us for more information about how we can help.
Bonnie lives in southwestern North Dakota on a three generation family ranch she and her husband Paul now own. Their horse program focuses on speed, trainability, and common sense utilizing some ‘old speed’ bloodlines in the broodmare band highlighted by stallions that are sons of Gulch TB, Western Bugs APHA, Champions Panther Mountain and Splash Bac. Many 1d barrel horses, local, regional and national winners have originated from their breeding program. Primary to the program is breeder knowledge of disposition, ability, and production history of the mares as it influences breeding choices for each foal crop. Every attempt is made to match foals with the ‘right’ owner resulting in the foals being given the best possible opportunity in life. The majority of their foals are privately marketed as weanlings.
Sandy and Charles Wilson have lived in Eastern Montana for 36 years—returning to the family ranch after 20 years away while Charles served our country in the Air Force. They raise cattle, sheep, horses and kids. They have three grown children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Next to their children and grandchildren, their passion is and has been horses. They started in the horse business with a couple of good mares and progressed from that. Disposition, good minds, trainability and athleticism are the traits that we emphasize, and we strive for a colt that has great cow sense and the speed to get the job done.
Their stallions and the outside stallions that they breed to have these bloodlines on their papers: Easy Jet, Dash For Cash, Western Perks, Colonel Freckles, Friendly Fritz, Fritz Command, Smart Little Lena, Freckles Playboy, and Texas Kicker, just to name a few. Some of the bloodlines that our mares carry are: Freckles Playboy, Doc O’ Lena, Doc Bar, Skipa Star, Triple Print, Raging Bull, Real Easy Jet, Sugar Bars, Leo, Azure Te, Friendly Fritz, King Fritz, Partnership, Paddys Irish Whiskey, Peppy San Badger, Doc O Dynamite, Smart Little Lena, Go Benny Go, Rocket Bar, Pepto Boonsmal and Annies Little Pepper.
Kristin and her husband Bruce Bainbridge, and her parents Merle and Rose Marie Aus raise Paint and Quarter Horses with speed and athletic ability. Their senior stallion, My Indian Money, APHA is a stakes placed winner and stakes placed track sire as well as a 1D barrel sire. Their mares and reference sires include the bloodlines of Raise Your Glass, Rocket Wrangler, Blushing Bug, Easy Jet, Dash For Cash, Jet Deck, Rare Bar and Firewaterontherocks. The whole family is excited by their recent purchase of an interest in a young Sun Frost and Dash Ta Fame grandson who will begin breeding mares in 2014.
Kristin is the technical person behind Horses of the West and built her own website at ausranch.com in 1999. She has successfully used the internet to sell her horses all across the US and Canada. As her interest in website marketing expanded, she began building sites for other small businesses and a select few horse breeder friends, including Sandy and Bonnie. Kristin will write articles about websites, software, and other business topics.
